The sophomore record from the Québécois solo act Gulguhk, spearheaded by the prolific artist behind Ifernach, Maeströ Cröque Mört, and Aufnorden, among others, presents a notable evolution in sound and style.
The album achieves an ethereal quality through a balance of guitars and synths, crafting an effulgent atmosphere that is quite immersive.
The melodies, while retaining an underlying saccharine quality, do not detract from the album’s inherent aggression.
This juxtaposition of endearing harmony and ferocity is a hallmark of the Québécoise black metal.
Despite its atmospheric leanings, “Pill​é​, Vendu et Trahi” does not stray from its black metal roots.
The vocals remain fiercely cold and chilling, perfectly complementing the instrumental backdrop.
The drumming is particularly noteworthy, showcasing a step-up in performance with its commanding presence and tight execution, propelling the album forward with relentless rhythm.
